Korean Ministry: “Stop employing foreigners”
The Ministry of Employment and Labor has said it wants small and medium-sized companies to stop employing foreigners and employ Koreans instead for low-skilled jobs.
In recent years the skills of foreign workers has generally risen due to improvements in the education systems of countries which Korean companies traditionally recruit from. Meanwhile, the skills – and crucially, the attitude - of Korean workers has been falling. “We want companies to recognize that Koreans are the new migrant workers”, said a Ministry official.
Civic groups are already planning to protest against the plan as defending Koreans rather than foreigners at labor tribunals doesn’t really provide the same feeling of self-righteousness.
